After years of lying dormant at the corner of Butler and Skippack Pikes
in Whitpain Township, the Broad Axe Tavern has been completed renovated
and is now open for business.
This historic tavern was built in 1681 making it the
oldest tavern in Pennsylvania and the second oldest in the United
States. Familiar to most in the area, the Broad Axe closed its doors in
2002 after more than 300 years. A group of local businessmen calling
themselves Broad Axe Partners, fronted by former chef of The William
Penn Inn, Matthew Doman, took on the task of updating the landmark
tavern. The structure has been painstakingly stripped down and rebuilt
to create a safe, efficient, modern building while maintaining its
heart and historic significance.
It’s a “green” restaurant with a unique experience for everyone including 16 beers on tap, a comprehensive wine list that includes a selection of bottles for $21 and under, and a broad menu of unique ‘tavern food’ that focuses on small plates and utilizes locally sourced products wherever possible. House specialties are Chesapeake Bay Crab Cakes, Ahi Tuna, Grilled Pizza and a variety of sandwiches and paninis. Happy Hour Monday-Friday from 4-6 PM. Drink specials daily. Our banquet room is perfect for rehearsal dinners, small weddings, christenings, business meetings, birthdays, and a variety of other events.
